As the holiday season draws near, the workload for postal offices increases significantly. Christmas is known for being one of the most consumerist times of the year, resulting in billions of packages being sent in the United States alone. According to official figures from the United States Postal Service (USPS), during the 2022 holiday season, more than 11.7 billion packages were sent. The average delivery time for these packages to reach their respective destinations was 2.5 days.
Investments to streamline the process
To improve the package delivery process during the holiday season, the USPS made an important investment called ‘Delivering for America.’ As a result, they hired over 10,000 seasonal workers, acquired 348 new package sorting machines, and increased their daily processing capacity to around 70 million, according to official information from the Postal Service.
“We understand the importance of every single package and letter that is sent during the holidays,” Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, adding that he is “confident” that USPS will be able to “ability to handle the peak season surge and deliver exceptional service to the American people during the holidays and beyond.”
When do you need to send a package for it to arrive by Christmas?
It’s important to note that due to the high volume of packages being handled during the Christmas season, several parcel services have announced their respective deadlines for sending packages so that they arrive at their destination on time for Christmas. The collection deadline for packages will vary depending on the parcel service you choose, but it will fall between 20 and 22 December.
