$1,000 checks in California in June 2023: Who qualifies and how to apply

The Golden State is providing stimulus checks or tax refunds and you can find out the ways in which to request them.

As you are likely aware, there are several government institutions in the United States that are continuing to send checks or tax refunds to help their residents facing financial difficulties. One such state is California.

California June 2023 stimulus checks: amounts and how to request them

Residents of Los Angeles County, California may be eligible for monthly payments of $1,000 for two years thanks to a Guaranteed Income Program. These are the eligibility requirements:

  • Be a resident of Los Angeles County
  • At least 21 years old, but under 24 as of September 1, 2023
  • Have been in foster care until age 18
  • Have an income equal to or less than 100% of the area median income for a household of one person or 120% for a household of two or more.
  • Have been affected by the coronavirus pandemic. 

For those looking to make an application, this can be done electronically through the Breathe Program website, where 200 people will be chosen. The dates to remember are these can be actioned from June 20 to July 3.

What other states are providing checks or tax refunds?

North Carolina

Residents of the City of Greensboro, North Carolina may be eligible for the Low Income Homeowner Assistance Program. If eligible, your household will receive a check for the difference between city property taxes paid in 2021 compared to what was paid in tax year 2022. The application deadline for this program is June 15. You can get more information about the eligibility requirements from the program website.

Colorado

Each year, the City of Boulder, Colorado provides rebates to help lower-income community members pay for groceries. This year, refunds are $99 for individuals and $302 for families. To be eligible, applicants must complete an application and meet financial eligibility guidelines (income less than $43,900 for individual filers and up to $62,700 for a family), plus have resided in Boulder for the entire 2022 calendar year and:

  • Have been 62 years of age or older for the entire 2022 calendar year
  • Being a person with a disability
  • A family with children under the age of 18 in the household for the entire 2022 calendar year

The application period began on March 1. Application forms must be received or postmarked by June 30. Applications and more information about the program can be found on the city’s website. The state of Colorado has the property tax rebate/rent/heating credit (PTC). These are the eligibility requirements:

  • Have lived in Colorado from January 1 to December 31, 2022
  • Have an income of less than $16,925 for single taxpayers and $22,858 for married filing jointly.
  • As of December 31, 2022, be age 65 or older, one surviving spouse age 58 or older, and be a disabled person of any age who has qualified for full benefits from January 1 to December 31, 2022 from any public or private plan or source based solely on your disability.
  • Have paid property taxes, rent, or heating bills
  • Not be claimed as a dependent 

The refund amount can be up to $1,044 per year for applicants and if you apply in 2023, you could receive a refundable tax credit of up to $1,000. For more information and to check the payment schedule, visit the program’s web portal.

Massachusetts

Taxpayers are eligible to receive a refund of approximately 14% of their state tax liability. People who file their 2021 return before September 15, 2023, will receive their payment one month after filing. If you filed your return in May, you will receive your payment in June.

New Mexico

In-state residents will receive a refund of $500 for single filers and $1,000 for joint filers. Payments will begin mailing out in the middle of this month to eligible residents who filed their state income tax return. 2021. Taxpayers have until May 31, 2024 to file their return and obtain a refund.

Pennsylvania

The state has the Rental/Property Tax Refund Program, which benefits eligible Pennsylvanians age 65 and older; widows and widowers over 50 years of age; and people with disabilities over the age of 18. The income limit is $35,000 a year for homeowners and $15,000 a year for renters, excluding half of Social Security income. The maximum standard rebate is $650, but supplemental rebates for qualified homeowners can increase rebates to $975.

Applications for the program will be accepted until June 30.
