Do you have Amazon Prime? Starting in October, this perk will no longer be free in some cases
The retail giant is phasing out a little-known feature that let subscribers share free shipping with friends and family outside their household.

Amazon is rolling back one of its lesser-known but widely appreciated benefits. Beginning October 1, Prime members in the US will no longer be able to use “Prime Invitee,” a feature that allowed subscribers to share free shipping perks with people outside their household.
That means September is the last month users can take advantage of it.
The program had been around since 2009, helping non-members enjoy free delivery when invited by someone with a Prime account. According to FOX Business, Amazon confirmed the change earlier this week.
What will replace the program?
Instead of Prime Invitee, Amazon is focusing on its Amazon Household program. That option lets subscribers share select Prime benefits with one other adult living in the same household, plus up to four teenagers and four children on linked accounts.
For households, this may be more practical — but for those who relied on sharing benefits with friends or extended family, the change will likely feel like a downgrade.
What does a Prime membership include?
Amazon Prime remains one of the company’s most powerful offerings. For $139 a year in the US, subscribers get:
- Free one-day and two-day delivery on millions of items.
- Prime Video, with a wide selection of movies, TV shows, and Amazon Originals.
- Prime Reading, offering rotating access to books and magazines.
- Exclusive discounts on select products and events like Prime Day.
This past July, Amazon announced its biggest Prime Day ever, reporting record-breaking sales across millions of items. The company also highlighted how the event boosted revenue for small and medium-sized businesses that sell on the platform.
