Dollar General announces the opening of 450 new stores across the US by 2026: the locations will seek to compete with rivals Family Dollar and Dollar Tree
The discount retailer has seen strong growth as US consumers across all income levels seek out better prices on everything from groceries to home goods.
Growing economic uncertainty has been driving US consumers across all income groups to seek out better prices on everything from groceries to home goods. This robust demand has been a boon for discount retailers like Dollar General.
The Tennessee-based company recently announced better than expected third-quarter earnings and raised its annual profit forecast.
During an earnings call with investors, Donny Lau, chief financial officer at Dollar General said that investing in the business is Dollar General’s first priority. This includes the company’s “existing store base, as well as other high-return growth opportunities such as new store expansion, remodels, and other strategic initiatives.”
The discount retailer said that it plans to open around 450 new locations in 2026 and revamp 4,250 stores across the United States. This is on top of the 575 new store openings included in the retailer’s 2025 expansion plans.
Where will the new Dollar General stores be located?
Most of the new Dollar General locations will located in rural communities reported the Wall Street Journal. These will feature larger floor plans to make room for more health and beauty products as well as fresh produce.
“We believe we are well positioned to increase market share with customers across all income brackets,” said Dollar General CEO Todd Vasos.
