East Coast Severe Storms and Tornado Watch: What areas could be affected on Tuesday?
East Coast braces for severe storms and potential tornadoes late Monday. Key areas at risk include coastal regions and major cities. Stay alert and prepared
Some communities along the East Coast of the United States are under a tornado watch through tonight. These alerts from the National Weather Service come after states in the South and Midwest have been walloped by these deadly and destructive storms this month. Already, twenty-one people have been killed by tornados this year, with the season stretching into July in some regions of the country. No Tornado Watch alerts have been issued for Tuesday, 28 May, so far by the National Weather Service (NWS). However, this could change rapidly, and it is best to follow the list of up-to-date alerts on the agency’s website.
Along the East Coast, the following regions are under a Tornado Watch, which means that the NWS has forecasted that the conditions for such a storm to arise are expected to be present in the coming hours or days.
Until 11 pm on Monday, 27 May, a Tornado Watch has been issued in these areas around the Chesapeake Bay:
- Chesapeake Bay North of Pooles Island, Maryland
- Chesapeake Bay From Pooles Island to Sandy Point, Maryland
- Chesapeake Bay From Sandy Point to North Beach, Marylandd
- Chesapeake Bay From North Beach to Drum Point, Maryland
- Chesapeake Bay From Drum Point Md to Smith Point, Virginia
- Tidal Potomac From Key Bridge to Indian Head, Maryland
- Tidal Potomac From Indian Head to Cobb Island, Maryland
- Tidal Potomac From Cobb Island Md to Smith Point, Virginia
- Patapsco River Including Baltimore Harbor, Chester River to Queenstown, Maryland
- Eastern Bay, Choptank River to Cambridge, Maryland and the Little Choptank River
- Patuxent River to Broomes Island Maryland, Tangier Sound and the Inland Waters Surrounding Bloodsworth Island
The same timeline has been issued for another set of alerts, which are also expected to end at 11 p.m. on Monday around Washington, D.C., and the DMV area more broadly.

Lastly, an alert is also in effect in some areas of North Carolina until 11 pm. Those under alert are residents of four eastern counties: Dare, Hyde, Tyrrell, and Washington. This alert expanded an earlier one that covered the areas near the Alligator River and the Pamlico Sound.
