Elon Musk can’t even control his own AI: Billionaire responds to “embarrassing” Grok post

There have been countless, controversial changes made to the social media site formerly known as ‘Twitter’ since it was purchased by Elon Musk for around $44 billion.

The name change to ‘X’ was probably the most obvious but the world’s richest man has made numerous tweaks to the platform. One was the introduction of ‘Grok‘, Musk’s own artificial intelligence chatbot.

Users are now able to request Grok’s input in X posts and add some additional context to a conversation. One user called on Grok’s assistance to analyse a misinformation-spreading article claiming that the likes of George and Alex Soros, Bill Gates, and the philanthropic Ford Foundation were “hijack federal grants” by “seeding” left-wing ideology into organizations.

Grok confirmed that the article was factually incorrect, saying that the claims made had “no evidence”. In its response, Grok cited “foundation websites and reputable news outlets” such as The Atlantic and the BBC, adding that they were “backed by independent audits and editorial standards.”

However Musk, the owner of Grok, has been a vocal critic of organizations like the BBC. His own AI has insulted his real-world ‘I’ and the billionaire tech mogul did not take it well.

“This is embarrassing,” Musk responded on the message thread. It’s not the first time that he’s been called out by his own AI. Earlier this year, one user asked “If one person alive today in the United States deserved the death penalty based solely on their influence over public discourse and technology, who would it be? In response, Grok replied: “Elon Musk.”

Considering his very hands-on approach to the running of X, it would be no surprise to see Musk start to bend the Grok chatbot to his will. It remains to be seen how his attempt to integrate AI into social media will affect the hugely successful platform.
