Experts defy common sense and warn against sleeping with the window open, especially during summer
In a time of rising temperatures, it’s important to know whether it’s better to keep your windows open or closed at home.

Summer has arrived in full force this year. A powerful heat wave recently hit the East Coast, bringing some of the highest temperatures seen in a decade. On days — and nights — this hot, one of the most common questions is what to do with your windows.
When it comes to keeping them open or closed, the common belief is that you should leave windows open to let fresh air in. But experts actually recommend the opposite: keeping them closed. A study conducted by researchers at Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany, analyzed the negative health effects of nighttime street noise.
They pointed to examples like traffic noise, especially in homes located near highways or busy streets. In such cases, the study found that nighttime noise can increase levels of stress hormones like cortisol. High cortisol levels can affect both physical and mental health and may weaken the immune system.
Over time, a weakened immune system can lead to a higher risk of infections and illness. That’s why air conditioning and/or fans are key tools for keeping room temperatures under control and ensuring quality sleep.
Life at home can become difficult without air conditioning, especially during extreme heat events. Being able to protect yourself from temperature spikes is crucial — and knowing every trick helps.
