Extra SNAP benefits for the summer: how much, who qualifies and how to apply
Some SNAP recipients could be eligible to receive extra money during the summer. Here are all the details that you need to know about the program.
Each month, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, formerly known as food stamps are sent out in all 50 states.
Benefits are deposited each month to an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card, which functions like a debit card to purchase food at certain establishments. The amount sent varies depending on the number of household members, but for the summer, some people will be able to receive even more.
Thanks to the Summer EBT program, families will be able to receive more money during the summer to cover food costs for children who lose access to free school meals through the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and the School Breakfast Program (SBP).

How to get extra SNAP benefits during the summer?
According to the Food and Nutrition Service, starting this summer 2024, families will be able to receive an extra $40 per eligible child, per month, from July through August on a prepaid card. Here are the eligibility requirements:
If you meet any of these requirements, your child’s eligibility is automatic. If you do not meet these guidelines, you must send in a school meal application. There is no exact deadline for when the last day to apply for these benefits is, but it is recommended that you apply as soon as possible to avoid any problems.
Applications are available online through your child’s school district’s website. If you want to apply in person, check the summer meal site locator to find the one nearest you. You can also text “Summer Meals” to 914-342-7744 or call 1-866-348-6479 to find a site near you. For more information, visit the Summer EBT website.
