The Global Remote Work Index ranks 108 countries based on what they offer as remote work destinations.
The index measures four main areas that determine the quality of remote work: cybersecurity, economy, infrastructure and security, tax and bureaucracy, including security from crime and access to human rights.
Published by security organisation NordLayer, the Global Remote Work Index is based on data from credible and recognised sources, such as the UN and the World Economic Forum.
Europe leads the way
European countries, especially those in Northern Europe lead the Global Remote Work Index. The top 10 countries according to the report are: Denmark; the Netherlands; Germany, Spain; Sweden; Portugal; Estonia; Lithuania; Ireland and Slovakia.
In fact, the countries of the old continent account for most of the 50% of the global remote work index, according to the authors.
It’s generally felt that government policies to encourage remote working within countries and across borders could increase the availability of talent in the coming years. Switzerland in particular is one nation actively keen to promote the initiative.
Research indicates that employers have been reducing remote working options since the COVID-19 pandemic, although some experts believe that flexible working will continue to prevail.
