February’s Social Security payment schedule is now well underway in the U.S., with millions of Americans across the country in line to receive benefits.

Who gets Social Security checks? How much?

Every month, the Social Security Administration (SSA) sends out Social Security payments to: retired workers; disabled workers who are part of the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) scheme; surviving family members of deceased workers; and Americans who qualify for the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program.

Retired workers constitute the overwhelming majority of the more than 75 million Social Security recipients in the U.S. As of December 2024, indeed, retirees represented some 70% of all Social Security beneficiaries.

The amount workers receive depends on how much they have paid in Social Security taxes, but the average retirement check in 2025 is just under $2,000 per month.

Disabled workers in the U.S. receive an average of nearly $1,600 a month, and the surviving spouse of a deceased worker is paid about $1,800 a month on average.

Under the SSI program - which differs from the above schemes as it is needs-based rather than contribution-based - the maximum monthly check for an individual beneficiary this year is about $1,000.

Take a look at 2025’s exact Social Security amounts on the SSA website.

What is the Social Security schedule for February 2025?

Supplemental Security Income

SSI beneficiaries should have already got their February payment. Indeed, they will have received it before the end of January.

The program’s checks are usually issued on the first of each month, but that payment date comes forward if the month begins on a weekend or holiday. As February 1 was a Saturday, the SSA was scheduled to pay out SSI checks on Friday, January 31.

Retirement, disability (SSDI) and survivors’ benefits

Most other Social Security recipients are to receive their February check on one of three Wednesdays, as part of a staggered system by which beneficiaries' payment date is determined by their birthday. These checks began going out yesterday, Wednesday, February 12.

The SSA’s staggered payment schedule for February 2025 is:

  • Wednesday, Feb. 12: Beneficiaries born between 1st and 10th of the month
  • Wednesday, Feb. 19: Beneficiaries born between 11th and 20th of the month
  • Wednesday, Feb. 26: Beneficiaries born between 21st and 31st of the month

Any there any exceptions to this Social Security schedule?

Yes: Retired workers, disabled workers and survivors who began receiving Social Security checks before May 1997 will always be issued their payments on the third of each month, regardless of when they were born.

These Social Security recipients should therefore have been paid their February money just over a week ago, on Monday, February 3.

You can check out the full Social Security payment schedule for 2025 on the SSA’s website.
