Update:

The main federal agency for disease control and prevention in the United States has issued an alert about the rising number of infections caused by the “flesh-eating bacteria.” With a fatality rate of 20%, the first 48 hours are critical.

Florida is being affected, with 82 reported cases and 19 deaths from Vibrio vulnificus, surpassing the number of infections recorded after Hurricane Ian in 2022.

The pathogen thrives under extreme weather conditions and low salinity between May and October. Additionally, environments prone to flooding and storm surges—weather phenomena intensified by climate change—are highly favorable for the bacteria’s spread.

Modes of transmission

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the primary mode of transmission is direct contact between open wounds or abrasions and contaminated water.

Authorities recommend avoiding water contact if you have an open wound and protecting any injuries. However, in case of accidental injury and suspected exposure, it is essential to clean the wound with soap and water and seek medical attention promptly.

There is also a significant risk of infection from consuming shellfish and crustaceans. Therefore, thorough cooking and proper handwashing after handling these foods are strongly advised.

Symptoms

The first signs of Vibrio vulnificus infection appear quickly and include redness, swelling, and hemorrhagic blisters. The bacteria can also enter the bloodstream, leading to sepsis, which can be fatal. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment are critical to reducing risk.

The CDC has a budget exceeding $11 billion and over 11,000 employees dedicated to preventing, monitoring, and disseminating information about Vibrio vulnificus infections. The bacteria particularly affect vulnerable populations and those with chronic illnesses.
