Florida workers will get a pay boost next month: see the new minimum wage and start date
At the end of September, the Sunshine State is set to raise the minimum wage, as part of a series of scheduled annual increases.
In September, Florida will raise the minimum wage statewide. With the increase, the Sunshine State will remain among the U.S. states with a minimum wage above the federal rate of $7.25 per hour, which has remained unchanged since July 2009.
Nationally, Florida ranks in the upper-middle tier among states with the highest minimum wages, trailing states such as Washington, California, New York, Connecticut, Hawaii, and Rhode Island, among others.
Florida’s current minimum wage
In 2020, more than six million Florida voters approved a constitutional amendment to increase the state’s minimum wage by $1 per year through 2026. These annual increases began in September 2021, when Florida’s minimum wage rose to $10 per hour. It increased to $11 in 2022, $12 in 2023, and $13 in 2024.
Since September 30 of last year, Florida’s minimum wage has stood at $14 per hour, with a tipped minimum wage of $10.98 per hour.
The final scheduled $1 increase will take place this year. On September 30, 2026, Florida’s minimum wage will rise to $15 per hour, while tipped employees will earn a minimum of $11.98 per hour.
Although this year’s increase marks the end of the automatic $1 annual raises, the minimum wage will continue to increase in the years ahead. The $15 hourly minimum wage will remain in effect from September 30, 2026, through December 31, 2027.
New rules for Florida’s minimum wage
Beginning in 2028, future increases will be tied to inflation. Under the amendment approved by Florida voters, minimum wage adjustments will be based on changes in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W).
A number of states have adopted inflation-based minimum wage increases as a way to help workers maintain their purchasing power over time.
