Flower moon May 2024: times and how to watch online and on TV
The full moon in May is known as the “Flower Moon,” find out how to best view it in person and online.
On Thursday, 23 May, the full Moon for May, known as the ‘Flower Moon,’ will grace the night sky. Maine’s Farmers Almanac, as noted by NASA, has a long history of publishing the names given to the full Moons by indigenous tribes that lived around the area where the state is found today. The name Flower Moon comes from the Algonquin, which lives in what today forms part of Eastern Canada. They saw the full bloom of flowers in May as a reflection of the full Moon’s beauty. Interestingly, NASA also refers to an old English name for this Moon, based on the tale of an English monk, St. Bede the Venerable, who wrote that in May, “cows could be milked three times a day.”
One’s best chance to see the Flower Moon will be on Thursday night, but for many in the US the Moon will appear full or nearly full each night between now and the 23rd of May.
So far, there are no links to live streams that will bring images of the Flower Moon. If this changes, this article will be updated.
A remarkable sight is expected in the US capital.
For those near Washington DC, a rare celestial event is on the horizon. NASA has announced that the Moon will pass in front of the star Antares, a sight that is not often seen. As the Moon covers the star from view, the light from Antares will be visible, creating a unique and awe-inspiring spectacle in the night sky.
