Francisco Fernández Yuste, HR expert: “You should change your job when you’re exhausted and all you want to do is lie down on the sofa”
The expert warns about the effects of burnout. Ignoring these signs can harm your development and mental health.

Most of us have had days when we come home completely drained. But according to human-resources expert Francisco Fernández Yuste, feeling wiped out every single night may be the clearest sign that it’s time to consider a career change.
Fernández Yuste — a psychologist and specialist in HR, coaching, career development, and mental health — has built a strong following through his platform Mejora Tu Éxito Laboral (Better Your Work Success). He says the modern workplace is filled with employees who overlook the early symptoms of burnout because they’ve normalized constant fatigue.
If the only thing you want is the couch, something’s wrong
One of the biggest red flags, he explains, is when someone ends their workday without an ounce of energy left. If the only plan you can imagine after getting home is collapsing on the couch and shutting out the world, that’s more than tiredness — it’s a sign that your job may be taking a toll on your mental and emotional health.
This level of exhaustion, he warns, pushes people into a “danger zone” where motivation, creativity, and decision-making begin to fall apart. Staying in a role that no longer sparks interest or presents new challenges can quietly stall your growth.
The hidden mental-health impact
The risks extend far beyond the office. Fernández Yuste notes that emotional exhaustion often leads to social withdrawal. People who feel drained after work are less likely to spend time with friends, join activities they once enjoyed, or share meaningful moments with others.
This isolation can compound the effects of daily stress, creating fertile ground for anxiety, depression, and other serious mental-health issues.
Changing jobs isn’t always easy. But Fernández Yuste believes it can be the healthiest — and sometimes the only — path forward when your emotional well-being and long-term growth are at risk.
