The 2024 tax season begins on January 29. Here is everything you need to know about free consultations in New York City.

It’s time to prepare everything you need to file your 2023 tax return, as the tax season 2024 is about to begin.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has announced that on January 29, it will begin receiving and accepting returns. For the first time since 2019, the deadline to submit the declaration will be April 15. Additionally, like every year, those people who request an extension will be able to submit their declaration later; this year, the deadline will be October 15.

As the start date of the 2024 tax season approaches, free consultations will be offered in New York City to help taxpayers file their returns.

What you should know about free tax advice in NY

The NYC Free Tax Prep program in New York City assists low-income taxpayers. This program is designed to ensure that taxpayers can take advantage of tax credits and benefits they are entitled to.

Who is eligible for assistance?

With the help of volunteer tax preparers, individuals with an income of $59,000 or less or a household income of $85,000 or less in 2023 can file their tax returns for free. The program offers three options: in-person tax preparation, delivery service, and online preparation. If you need help paying fines, the IRS offers assistance as well. In-Person Tax Preparation

Expert IRS-certified volunteers will assist in accurately completing your tax return. This city has put together a list of all documents that one should bring to your appointment.

Delivery service

Online

Virtual options include:

  • GetYourRefund.org: A virtual program that connects taxpayers with NYC Free Tax Prep providers to complete their return.
  • Virtual Tax Prep:  A secure and reliable online tax preparation service, where a tax preparer will help you prepare your taxes. You will be able to file your 2023 tax return during a 60-90 minute virtual call.
    Service options include Ariva, Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation, Project Hospitality and Urban Upbound.
  • Assisted Self-Preparation: Allows taxpayers to complete their tax return online on their own and a volunteer IRS-certified preparer from VITA/TCE will be on hand to assist them. Representatives are available by phone or email to answer questions.
