From ChatGPT to Mindtrip: Why AI tools still fall short at planning the perfect vacations
There are numerous AI tools that people can use to plan their “dream” trip but as some have found out, if you leave it all to AI you can get a nightmare.
Artificial intelligence platforms have become a go-to these days to help us perform a variety of tasks including planning dream vacations. While it may seem like these tools could save you hours of planning what to see and do when traveling to an unknown location, they can often come up short.
Each platform has its strengths and weaknesses according to those who have put them to the test. Here’s a look at what the travel experts had to say about them.
Careful using AI to plan your vacation
The first thing you need to keep in mind before you start planning a trip using AI is the prompt that you give the platform. You want to give clear instructions and details about what you are looking to do, when you plan to travel, and who you will be travelling with. For example, Gunnar Olson at Thrifty Traveler shared that his infant child would be along for the trip in his prompt so that days wouldn’t be overbooked with activities.
However, despite your best efforts, be aware that the system may ignore what you tell them or get “flummoxed,” even after repeated attempts to steer them in the right direction. This was the experience of Craig Stoltz and his colleagues at AFAR with a couple of the AI platforms.
Gunnar’s top pick of the AI platforms was a combination of his own planning along with the aid of Claude over ChatGPT, Deepseek, Gemini, and Microsoft CoPilot. He was impressed with the abilities of all the systems to make plans for him in a place that he had never visited. But even though these systems can mine your data and you can give them the idea of what you want to do, in the end only you really know yourself and the people you will be traveling with.
As for the reason he found teaming up with Claude the best option, he said that he “was blown away by the attention to detail when it came specifically to budgeting and booking the trip. Plus, it offered resources like packing lists, taxi companies, apps to download, and even local weather forecasting tools.”
Meanwhile, the Team at AFAR tested eight different AI platforms to develop travel itineraries and found that Gondola, Google Gemini, Kayak on ChatGPT, and Mindtrip provided the best experiences. While, they all had their pros and cons, they found Mindtrip to be the most sophisticated tool for planning and booking a trip.
