The State Department can update travel advisories at any time if conditions change significantly. For this reason, it encourages citizens to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). Through STEP, travelers can receive important alerts and updates from the nearest US embassy or consulate for the country they’re visiting or living in. A color-coded “Travel Advisories” map is also available on the State Department’s official website, showing the risk level by destination.

To assess travel risks, the government uses a four-level system:

  • Level 1: Exercise normal precautions
  • Level 4: Do not travel

Countries the US State Department advises against visiting

Given rising tensions with Iran and other global hotspots, the current administration has emphasized the risk of demonstrations targeting US citizens and interests abroad. As a result, Americans are advised not to travel to the following countries:

Afghanistan, Belarus, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Haiti, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Mali, Myanmar (formerly Burma), North Korea, Russia, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Ukraine, Venezuela, Yemen, and Gaza.

All of these countries are classified as Level 4 due to life-threatening risks. According to the State Department,The US government has extremely limited or no ability to assist, even in emergencies. We advise US citizens not to travel to these countries or to leave as soon as it is safe to do so.”
