Valentine’s Day is celebrated on 14 February, a date eagerly awaited by all lovers. However, there are those who prefer to recognize and celebrate the affection between friends. Well, Galentine’s Day is a perfect remedy.

This festivity takes place the day before Valentine’s Day, that is 13 February, and its purpose is to celebrate female friendship as a result of the void that is usually caused by the famous Valentine’s Day.

Galentine’s Day is purported to be created by the NBC comedy series, Parks and Recreation.

How did Galentine’s Day come about?

The first time Galentine’s Day was mentioned was in episode number 16 of the second season of the sitcom ‘Parks and Recreation’, aptly titled Galentine’s Day.

In this episode, the protagonist Amy Poehler, who plays Leslie Knope, takes her friends to a brunch while she has several gifts prepared for them, because in the words of the itself, it is a day in which “ladies celebrate ladies”, hence its name. A quick portmanteau using “gal” and slap it onto Valentine’s Day and voila! Galentine’s Day.

Due to the popularity the celebration gained, it is mentioned again in the fourth season, where Leslie Knope points out that it should be considered as a national celebration.
