The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) has identified the perpetrator of the Apalachee High School shooting.

At approximately 9:30 a.m. local time on Wednesday, September 4, police officers and firefighters responded to an active shooter emergency call at the school, located at 940 Haymon Morris Road in Winder, Georgia.

The shooting has claimed the lives of four people, two schoolchildren and two teachers, and nine others were hospitalized after being wounded, according to Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Chris Hosey. Five more people went to nearby hospitals on their own with symptoms of “anxiety” and “panic attacks,” a spokesman for the Northeast Georgia Health System reported.

Georgia high school shooter identified

The GBI identified the shooter as Colt Gray, a 14-year-old high school student. Once authorities located the shooter, he surrendered and was immediately taken into custody.

Our officer confronted him and the shooter quickly understood that if he didn’t surrender, he would end up in an officer-involved shooting,” Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith said. “He surrendered, got on the ground and the deputy arrested him,”

Colt Gray will be charged with murder and tried as an adult. In the meantime, the investigation remains “active and ongoing.”

Apalachee High School has an enrollment of 1,900 students, according to U.S. News & World Report, and is located about 45 miles north of Atlanta, the state capital.
