Get ready: hurricane season may become more severe this September, according to experts
So far, the 2025 hurricane season has brought six named storms - one of which developed into a Category 5 strength hurricane.

What has been a relatively quiet hurricane season may soon start to turn into something more dangerous. Since the season officially got underway on June 1, the US has been hit by just six named storms - and only one of them, Erin developed into a Category 5 strength hurricane.
8/28 2pm EDT: The tropics should remain quiet through the weekend. A tropical wave is forecast to emerge off of Africa on Sunday. It has a low (20%) chance of formation next week over the eastern Atlantic. More: https://t.co/tW4KeGdBFb pic.twitter.com/OLkNOqfE49

The 2025 Atlantic Hurricane season so far
Two tropical storms, Barry and Chantal made landfall on the mainland, by which time both had weakened. Erin had much more of an impact, causing flooding and power outages in Cabo Verde, much of the Caribbean and East Coast of the US. As for fatalities, 26 people have lost their lives - several of them drowned in flooding while one was electrocuted.
While Tropical Storm Fernand continues to edge eastward, it has already started to weaken. Fernand is currently located about 600 miles south-southeast of Cape Race, Newfoundland, with maximum sustained winds of around 45 mph and is not expected to make landfall.
Hurricane #ERIN marked the 6th occurrence since 1851 of a season's first hurricane becoming a Category 5. The only other occurrences were 1977, 1980, 1992, 2007, and 2024. pic.twitter.com/sao4BqnGQV

More storms expected in September
However, with September just around the corner, storm activity in and around the Atlantic Basin is about to get more lively as the season enters its peak.
“Sometimes you can get these lulls in the middle of the hurricane season, and it looks like we are going to be having one, at least across the main development region,” Alex DaSilva, lead hurricane expert for AccuWeather explains.
Meteorologists the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration are predicting that there could be between five and nine hurricanes (Category 3 and above) in the three months leading up to the end of November.
That would make 2025 an above-average season - there were 11 last year, seven in 2023 and eight in 2022. The average number of named storms per year is 14 and we are already almost halfway to that figure with three months of the season to go.
The 2025 hurricane season officially began on June 1 and ends November 30.
