Goodbye to $1,400 IRS stimulus check: these are the U.S. taxpayers who cannot collect the ‘last call’ for tax relief

A million Americans will be receiving a $1,400 stimulus check by the end of this month if they haven’t already. Who’s gets one and who doesn’t?

Last call for IRS $1,400 stimulus payment

Less than two months after President Biden assumed office in 2021 he signed the American Rescue Plan Act, passed by Democrats in Congress, which was loaded with $1.9 trillion in covid-19 spending and relief funds for businesses, workers and families. The bill included expanded unemployment benefits, an enhanced Child Tax Credit and $1,400 Economic Impact Payments, better known as stimulus checks.

The latter was the third such payment which funneled $400 billion to over 175 million eligible Americans. While most Americans received theirs automatically based on the previous year’s tax return, there were millions of taxpayers who failed to file a tax return who had to claim it through their tax return for that year. The tax agency made an effort to raise awareness at the time, but due to the complex nature of filing a tax return, even some of those who were eligible for the funds did not claim them through the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit.

Fortunately for them, the IRS reviewed its records and found a million taxpayers who are still owed money from the third stimulus payment should be seeing theirs soon, if it hasn’t already appeared in their bank account. “To minimize headaches and get this money to eligible taxpayers, we’re making these payments automatic, meaning these people will not be required to go through the extensive process of filing an amended return to receive it,” said IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel in a statement.

Who’s gets a $1,400 stimulus payment and who doesn’t?

If you already received the third Economic Impact Payment or claimed it through the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit, that’s that. As mentioned, the IRS will automatically send the funds that correspond to eligible Americans, up to $1,400 was approved for every man, woman and child or dependent who did not exceed certain income thresholds, for those who filed a 2021 tax return but failed to claim it. Those payments should arrive by the end of January for most.

However, those who never filed a 2021 tax return still have time to submit one to the Internal Revenue Service, but time is running out. The deadline for the “last call” on claiming the third stimulus check through the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit, and any other tax refunds that they may be able to claim from that fiscal year, is April 15, 2025.

If you are in doubt about whether you received the payment, you can check your tax records online with your ID.me account. If you don’t have one, it may be something you should think about doing. You can not only check tax records, but it can also be used for accessing Social Security information and can help protect your digital identity across multiple websites to help ensure that nobody is pretending to be you online.

Eligibility to receive $1,400 stimulus check payment from IRS

The income requirements for the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit, third EIP, were the same as those for the other two stimulus checks passed by Congress. A single tax filer must make under $75,000, $112,500 as a Head of Household filer, or less than $150,000 for married couples who file jointly.

However, the phaseout above those thresholds was faster for the third EIP than the previous two rounds, with a cutoff for eligibility at $80,000 for single filers, $120,000 for Head of Household filers, and $160,000 for married couples who file jointly.
