Goodbye to human labor: China showcases its automated factory that produces one phone per second, 24 hours a day
Xiaomi boasts a fully autonomous factory where they create millions of mobile devices in a very short time.
To some, it might sound like science fiction or something ripped straight from a Black Mirror episode. But this is already a reality. A few years ago, Chinese tech giant Xiaomi launched a completely autonomous factory covering roughly 870,000 square feet, where one smartphone is produced every second. The entire operation runs without a single human worker and entirely in the dark.
How artificial intelligence makes it possible
This technological leap is powered by HyperIMP, an artificial intelligence system that monitors machinery in real time, anticipates potential failures, and automatically corrects problems before they escalate. The platform is so efficient that Xiaomi can manufacture an astonishing 10 million high-end smartphones per year at this single facility.
At the same time, the factory represents China’s broader shift toward intelligent automation, moving away from an industrial model built on low-cost labor. Today, China is home to roughly half of the world’s industrial robots, positioning the country as a global leader in advanced manufacturing.
A factory without human workers, by design
Chinese officials and company executives stress that the goal is not simply to produce more devices, but to free people to focus on higher-value work such as research and development, product design, and advanced maintenance.
This approach was a central pillar of the Made in China 2025 strategy, a national plan aimed at driving unprecedented growth across key industries. While not all of its original targets were met, China did significantly reduce its reliance on the United States for critical technologies.
Still, experts have raised concerns about potential vulnerabilities at Xiaomi’s factory, including heavy dependence on artificial intelligence and exposure to cybersecurity risks. Even so, the message is clear. Despite unresolved challenges, China is leading a major transformation of its industrial base, prioritizing faster innovation over cheaper production.
