Google has been using artificial intelligence in its products for years, but in the face of the buzz created by Open AI’s ChatGPT, the tech giant is upping its game.

Aside from working to improve their flagship search program, Google will be adding generative artificial intelligence tools to its popular suite of apps called Google Workspace, which includes Gmail and Google Docs.

Generative AI, which ChatGPT utilizes, refers to a category of artificial intelligence techniques that enable machines to generate new and original data that mimic human-like creativity. This includes text, images, music, and even videos.

Google plans to release generative AI tools that can help workers and students in their daily tasks. The company will soon be rolling out these new components in Gmail and Google Docs to a select group of testers.

How can workers and students use Google’s new AI features?

People have already been making use of AI in Google tools, like when they use Smart Compose and Smart Reply in Gmail. The new generative AI features will take it a step further.

Writing

Users of Gmail and Docs will be assisted in their writing, so that writer’s block will easily be hurdled. Google will embed generative AI in Gmail and Docs, so that people can get started on writing emails and reports with no problems. All you have to do is input the topic you wish to tackle, and you get your first draft already generated. After that you can edit and improve your work, with the help of the program’s suggestions.

Presentations

Producing creative presentations will also be facilitated for Slides users. Making slideshows for projects, speeches, or demonstrations will made much easier with images, audio, and videos that are automatically generated.

Spreadsheets

For those who work with spreadsheets, generative AI will provide auto-completion which will provide insights and analysis from raw data in Sheets. The new feature will also offer formula generation and contextual categorization.

Google has stated that they will beta-test the new experience throughout the year before launching it to the general public. There is no set date yet for the new features’ release.
