Guillermo del Toro Oscar: How many Academy Awards has he won? For what movies?

Over the course of his career, the Mexican director has received numerous accolades for his work including three Academy Awards.

Guillermo del Toro is right up there with some of the best directors making films right now. The Mexican has been rightly rewarded with Academy Award nominations as well as wins.

He has won a total of three personal Academy Awards. His Oscar wins are for:

  • Best Animated Film - ‘Pinocchio’ (2023)
  • Best Director - ‘The Shape of Water’ (2017)
  • Best Picture - ‘The Shape of Water’ (2017)

In addition to these wins, del Toro films have picked up five more Academy awards. However, as they are for aspects such as production design they have not been listed here.

He has also been nominated for several other Academy Awards throughout his career, including Best Original Screenplay for ‘The Shape of Water’ and Best Original Screenplay and Best Foreign Language Film for ‘Pan’s Labyrinth.’

His adaptation of Pinocchio has won the Best Animated Film in 2023.

Pan’s Labyrinth

In 2007, a del Toro film won its first Academy Awards for ‘Pan’s Labyrinth.’ These were: Best Achievement in Cinematography, Best Achievement in Art Direction, and Best Achievement in Makeup.

The film is a dark fairy tale set in post-Civil War Spain and tells the story of a young girl who discovers a magical world against the backdrop of her military father hunting socialist maquis.

The Shape of Water

Del Toro won three more Academy Awards for his film ‘The Shape of Water’ in 2018. Aside from Best Picture and Best Director, the film won Best Production Design and Best Original Score.

This film is a romantic fantasy drama set in the 1960s and tells the story of a mute janitor who falls in love with an aquatic creature held in captivity.
