In recent months, various retailers and fast food chains have announced a reduction in their prices with the aim of providing some financial relief to customers’ pocket books and at the same time attracting more clientele. Among the latest fast food companies to join the initiative of providing products at a lower price is Burger King.

According to a memo obtained by Bloomberg, Burger King is working on its own $5 menu, which could be available at the end of June. The launch would take place shortly before its main competition, McDonald’s, does the same after a drop in customer traffic.

As confirmed by a company representative to ABC News, the low-cost menu will run under the name “$5 Your Way Meal” and will include a sandwich option, chicken nuggets, fries and soda, resulting in a complete meal. Among the sandwich options available are the Whopper Jr., Chicken Jr. and the Bacon Cheeseburger.

Regardless of their plans, we are moving full speed ahead with our own plans to launch our own $5 value meal before [McDonald’s does] − and run it for several months,” reads the memo obtained by Bloomberg and sent by the president of Burger King in the United States and Canada, Tom Curtis.

Why has fast food consumption decreased in the USA?

Fast food consumption in the USA has decreased considerably in recent months. A survey by consulting firm Revenue Management Solutions shows that about 25% of Americans who earn less than $50,000 a year are reducing their consumption of fast food.

“Consumers continue to be even more discriminating with every dollar that they spend as they face elevated prices in their day-to-day spending, which is putting pressure on the industry‚” McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski explained to CBS News.

“[I]t’s imperative that we continue to keep affordability at the forefront for our customers,” he added.
