Here’s what’s next after the Senate passed Trump’s “big beautiful bill”: When will the House vote?
President Donald Trump’s flagship legislative package narrowly survived the Upper House but it could be signed into law later this week.

The fate of President Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” is hanging in the balance despite having narrowly passed the Senate on Tuesday.
The Upper House was split on the proposal after three Republicans crossed the aisle to vote with the Democrats. In the end, Vice President J. D. Vance was required to provide a tie-breaking vote when the bill was stuck at 50-50.
The bill now moves to the House of Representatives, where the Republicans can only afford to lose three seats in the 435-member House. Trump is eager to have the bill signed by Friday, July 4, and the House could stage a vote on Wednesday.
However it will not be plain sailing in the House. With such a small majority, the GOP will need to keep the caucus together and recent changes made in the Senate will likely provoke more problems. The Senate moved to increase cuts the Medicaid, while also adding a higher price tag. A study from the Congressional Budget Office found that the Senate bill could add around $3.3 trillion to federal deficits in the next decade.
The GOP rebels in the Senate were unwilling to support the bill due to the proposed cuts to Medicaid, something that Trump had previously promised not to do. Sen. Thom Tillis, a Republican from North Carolina, warned that Trump was going to “break his promise by pushing [Americans] off of Medicaid because the funding’s not there any more."
Speaking on Tuesday, GOP Rep. Chip Roy revealed that he had major concerns about the bill that was passed in the Senate. He was previously critical of previous versions of the bill and indicated that he is unlikely to support the latest iteration: “I think the odds are a hell of a lot lower than they were even 48 hours ago or 72 hours ago based on the deal-cutting that I just saw.”
For the first few months of his second term, Trump had benefited from near-unflinching loyalty from lawmakers within his own party. But the debate over this new package - a consequence of the very real ideological issues that it gives some Republicans - present a real challenge to his authority.
Getting the “big, beautiful bill” passed in time for July 4 would be a major win for Trump. But at this stage, it’s difficult to see how it gets there in time.
