Game of Thrones fans rejoice as they prepare for the prequel House of Dragon to hit their screens on 21 August.

HBO picked up a pilot from producers and screenwriters Martin and Ryan J. Condal “tracks the beginning of the end of Houses Targaryen.” For those less familiar with author’s George R. R. Martin’s fantasy universe, House Targaryen includes Daenerys Targaryen or the Queen of Dragons.

Will there be any character cross over?

Those who were big fans of Daenerys Targaryen may be sad to hear that this series takes place more than two hundred in the past and follows the the battle for the Iron Throne between the brother and daughter of King Viserys I Targaryen. This time, after generations Targaryen rule in Westeros, divisions begin to tear the family apart.

What separated Daenerys from others vying for the Iron Throne was her Dragons, which correspond to a long held tradition in her family. The show will include many more dragons, romances, and betrayals.

Unlike the future generations of his family members, King Viserys I Targaryen, the fifth king of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, is known as warm and decent. His daughter, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, would be the first woman to sit upon the throne, but her uncle Prince Daemon Targaryen, sees himself as the presumptive heir.

King Viserys I Targaryen will be played by award winning actor Paddy Considine, Daemon Targaryen will be portrayed by former Dr. Who star Matt Smith, and Rhaenyra by Emma D’Arcy.

Based on the storyline there may be no character overlap between the two shows. However, Carice van Houten from portrayed the Melisandre of Asshai, who received the nickname the Red Woman, said she was interested in returning to the role. Melisandre was born in 100 BC, meaning that she may be the only character from the previous series that would have been alive at the time.

So far HBO has not announced that she will be starring in the prequel but producers could be keeping quiet to make it a surprise for GOT fans.

Where can I watch?

The series will premiere on Sunday August 21 on HBO and HBO Max and the season will consist of ten episodes.
