ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

How do experts think AI could make the human race extinct?

Artificial Intelligence is here to stay. Experts on the subject warn about its risks and call for guardrails, noting that it could lead to human extinction.

Experts warn: AI will lead to the extinction of humanity

There is no turning back, Artificial Intelligence(AI) is here to stay. It is only a matter of time before AI understands behavior patterns, human needs and feelings.

In fact, a couple of weeks ago, Bill Gates expressed his optimism about the possibility that Microsoft could win the race to create a “personal assistant” which could spell the end of other tech giants like Google or Amazon. However, experts in the field have begun to warn about the possible risk of human extinction if these new technological advances are misused.

They warn about the risk of human extinction due to AI

According to an open letter by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis, misuse of Artificial Intelligence could lead to the extinction of the human race, for which is why they are calling on legislators to establish “guardrails” that help regulate its use; They warn that this is an issue as serious as pandemics or nuclear wars.

Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war,” read the letter; while Dan Hendrycks, executive director of the Center for AI Security has said of the situation “We need to be having the conversations that nuclear scientists were having before the creation of the atomic bomb.”

“The increasing concern about the potential impacts of AI is reminiscent of early discussions about atomic energy. ‘We knew the world would not be the same‘ J. Robert Oppenheimer once recounted.”

“There are many ‘important and urgent risks from AI,’ not just the risk of extinction; for example, systemic bias, misinformation, malicious use, cyberattacks, and weaponization. These are all important risks that need to be addressed,” Hendricks posted on Twitter.

The fight to see who creates the best AI tool

Currently, the fight to see who manages to create the best tool for Artificial Intelligence is led by Google with the announcement of Bard, as well as OpenAI , the creators of ChatGPT; and Microsoft, which has invested millions of dollars in artificial intelligence developers, including OpenAI, with the goal of introducing the tool into most of its programs.

One of the biggest benefactors so far has been Nvidia, which builds the GPUs that power much of the AI infrastructure is being used for running the generative AI programs. The company has seen demand surge as well as its market valuation.
