How do I collect my Powerball winnings?
For the Powerball draw, the size of your prize and the state where the winning ticket was purchased will determine your options for claiming the money.
Powerball tickets can be purchased in all but six states in the US. Most prizes that contestants win can be picked up in cash at any local retailer that sells lottery tickets, but it must be done in the state where the winning ticket was sold. Claimants also have a time limit after the prize drawing to collect any money they have won.
However, lucky contestants that win larger prizes have a few options for how they can claim their prize, but will be required to fill out some forms. For the largest prizes, they will also need to make a choice for how they want to receive the prize, either in a lump sum or spread out over several payments.
How to claim Powerball prizes
Powerball prizes have set amount tiers depending on how many numbers you have matched. Most prizes are below $100 which can be easily claimed, but for prizes of $50,000 or more, state lottery organizations provide a choice of options to claim the winnings. It’s recommended that you sign the back of your ticket just to be on the safe side, especially if you hit it big.
Prizes of $100 or less
For prizes of $100 or less, players can go to any licensed lottery retailer or lottery customer service office to get cash in hand. They also have the option of mailing their ticket into a state lottery office. You will need to check the state where the ticket was purchased for the address where it needs to be sent.
$50,000 prizes and above
For winnings of $50,000 or more, players will need to fill out some paperwork in order to claim their prize. Each state has a state-specific lottery claim form that needs to be filled out. Also you will need to provide some form of valid identification, check with the state lottery where you will be claiming your winnings to see which forms are accepted. And, of course you will need the original winning ticket, copies are not accepted.
To claim the prize, you will need to visit a lottery customer service center in the state where you bought the winning ticket or mail the documents required, plus the winning ticket. Some states provide drop boxes, like in New York and Florida, where the winning ticket and documents can be deposited, but this option is not available in California and Texas for example.
For Jackpots and prizes that require a choice of annuity payments, some states require that you appear in person so that it can be witnessed by a lottery official and a notary.

Things to know about mailing in winning tickets
All state lotteries have expiration dates for when a prize can be claimed and they vary from state to state. Normally, players can find an expiration date on the ticket, otherwise you can check with the state lottery agency. The same goes for how long after the drawing a mailed-in winning ticket must be postmarked. Likewise, each state has rules for the winning ticket amount that can be claimed via mail.

Keep a paper trail for your winning ticket
It is recommended that you if you choose to mail your winning ticket, that you send it via certified mail, the state and the postal service are not responsible for lost or damaged lottery tickets in transit. As well, you should keep a copy of all the documents, including of the front and back of the lottery ticket, that you turn over to the lottery officials as they will keep the originals.
