How long is the Trump - Biden debate scheduled for? Time limit, rules and format information
Despite big changes with the new rules, expectations are soaring for potentially intense exchanges between the two former presidents.
The first presidential debate between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump in the 2024 election cycle is scheduled to last 90 minutes, with two commercial breaks. The debate, moderated by CNN’s Jake Tapper and Dana Bash, will take place on 27 June.

The candidates will stand at uniform podiums, with positions determined by a coin toss. Microphones will be deactivated except for the speaker’s turn to prevent interruptions, a persistent issue in their previous debates.
No props or pre-written notes will be permitted on stage, but each candidate will be provided with a pen, a notepad, and a bottle of water.
The format of the debate
The debate will begin with a question, followed by two minutes for each candidate to respond. One-minute rebuttals and responses to rebuttals will ensue, along with additional time at the moderators’ discretion. Visual cues, such as flashing red lights, will alert candidates to their remaining speaking time.
In a departure from tradition, there will be no opening statements, and the debate will conclude with each candidate delivering a two-minute closing statement. Additionally, there will be no live audience in an attempt to minimize disruptions during the debate.
