BALTIMORE BRIDGE
How long will it take to fix the FSK bridge?
After the tragic collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, questions circulate as to when the structure could be repaired
Early on Tuesday morning, the Francis Scott Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland, collapsed after being struck by a container ship. Stretching 1.6 miles, it contains the world’s third longest span of truss bridge which measures 1,200 feet. A truss bridge is a specific construction that does not include hinges or joints and stands along three or more supports. The container ship that struck the FSK bridge knocked into one of those supports, leading the bridge to collapse under the weight of the metal frame.
Authorities have yet to report on any fatalities, but the images captured of the collapse do show cars falling into the water. The search and rescue team remains ongoing and is the complete focus of authorities at this time.
How long will the repairs take?
The bridge forms part of I-695 and helps to connect the coastal areas of Baltimore, like Hawkings Point and Dundalk, with the interior of the city and beyond.
The timeline for repairing the bridge is still unknown. The damage must be evaluated, and the relevant authorities must decide whether the bridge can be repaired or if the entire structure will need to be rebuilt. At this time, officials are focused on evaluating the damage and ensuring that all resources necessary are available to the search and rescue teams on site.
