Born Cynthia Ann Smith in 1957, she was adopted by a Canadian couple. She graduated from Monessen High School in 1975 and attended Bethany College, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Theater in 1979. Three years later, she graduated from Yale University with a Carol Dye Award in Drama.

She began her career in television, working on series such as ‘Hill Street Blues’, before transitioning to film. She is married to director and producer Joel Coen, who has directed her in several films.

The American actress is part of the select group of actresses, including Meryl Streep and Ingrid Bergman, who have won three Academy Awards. They are only surpassed by Katharine Hepburn, who won four awards. She has achieved the triple crown of acting: an Oscar, Emmy, and Tony.

Frances McDormand has won three Academy Awards and has been nominated for the award six times. She won her first Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Marge Gunderson in ‘Fargo’ (1996). Her second Oscar victory came for her role in ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri’ (2017). She also won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for ‘Nomadland’ (2020).
