The 80th Golden Globe Awards will be held at The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, on Tuesday 10 January from 8pm ET and will be hosted by stand-up comedian Jerrod Carmichael. British actress – and screenwriter – Dame Emma Thompson received a Golden Globe nomination for her role in Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, a sex comedy-drama which was released in June 2022. In the film, which focuses on the sexual needs of a woman in her 60s, Thompson plays the dual role of Nancy Stokes/Susan Robinson and…I’ll leave it there. No spoilers!

Speaking in an interview with Hollywood entertainment website Deadline, Thompson said of her role: “It’s absolutely fascinating. It’s been fascinating, and I think it’s probably one of the most satisfying and fulfilling things I’ve ever had the opportunity to do, and I do think of it as some of the best work I’ve ever done, because I don’t think I could have done it 10 years ago. I think it hit me at just the right moment in my life. My age, everything about it just hit at the right moment.

Which award has Emma Thompson been nominated for and who is she up against?

Thompson has been nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy or Musical. This is the third time she has been nominated in this particular category, after Junior in 1994 and Last Chance Harvey in 2008 (she didn’t win on either occasion).

The other nominees are Lesley Manville (Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris), Margot Robbie (Babylon), Anya Taylor-Joy (The Menu) and Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everyone All At Once).

Thompson has previously won two Golden Globe Awards. She won Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama for Howards End in 1992, the first time she ever received a nomination. She then won Best Screenplay for Sense and Sensibility three years later.

In addition to her two Golden Globes, Thompson has also won two Academy Awards (also for Howards End – Best Actress in a Leading Role, and for Sense and Sensibility – Best Adapted Screenplay). She is the only person in the history of the Academy Awards to have won for both acting and writing.

As well as winning BAFTAs (British Academy Film Awards) for Best Actress in a Leading Role in the same two films, she also won a British Academy Television Best Actress Award in 1987 for her roles in Fortunes of War and Tutti Frutti. In 1998, she won the only Emmy Award of her career so far for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series after appearing in an episode of Ellen the previous year.
