John Williams, the five-time Oscar-winning composer and longtime collaborator of director Steven Spielberg has received his fifty-third Academy Award nomination this year. Three of the five films for which Williams has taken home an Oscar were projects he worked on with Spielberg. This year’s nomination for Best Orignal Score for ‘The Fabelmans’ is also a Spielberg film.

Over the course of his long career in Hollywood, his five wins came in:

  • 1972 for ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ (Best Scoring: Adaptation and Original Song Score);
  • 1976 for ‘Jaws’ (Best Original Score);
  • 1978 for ‘Star Wars’ (Best Original Score);
  • 1983 for ‘E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial’ (Best Original Song); and
  • 1994 for ‘Schindler’s List’(Best Original Score).

The long collaboration between Williams and Spielberg

The two Hollywood legends explained in an interview that they have never fought over their decades-long collaborative and creative relationship.

Very much in sync, Spielberg explained that he had never once been disappointed with the choices for his film’s score that Williams had made. Six years ago, when John Williams was honored with the American Film Institute’s Lifetime Achievement Award, Spielberg was tapped to give the introduction.

“How does he do it?” Asked the director when opening his remarks. “The truth is we will never know.”

At the time, the two had collaborated on twenty-seven movies over four decades.

‘The Fabelmans’ is their most recent collaboration since the event, and at the 95th Academy Awards, is nominated for:

  • Best Picture
  • Best Director
  • Best Actress
  • Best Supporting Actor
  • Best Original Screenplay
  • Best Original Score
  • Best Production Design.
