According to the latest data from the CDC, there were over 48,000 firearm-related deaths in the nation in 2022. Four out of ten of those were firearm homicides. Even more people are injured by firearms.

The United States is an outlier in the world in the amount of gun violence that communities across the nation experience. Among 65 high-income countries and territories, the US ranks seventh according to data analyzed by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation.

However, the US is at the top of the list when comes to school shootings. The rate of occurrence of this perennial scourge for young Americans has been on the rise over the past several years. While it dramatically decreased during the first year of the pandemic, came back with a vengeance the subsequent years.

That is down from 82 in 2023, the highest number ever recorded.

This year’s school shootings took place at college campuses nine times and 27 were on K-12 school grounds. The data up to July 11 reported 17 fatalities and at least 39 people injured.

The data was compiled through an analysis of reported events gathered by Education Week, Everytown for Gun Safety and Gun Violence Archive which the news outlet cross checked with accounts registered by schools, police and in the media.
