How many school shootings have there been so far in the US in 2024?
The US has a unique problem where students are at a much greater risk of being shot in school compared to anywhere in the UK.
The number of school shootings so far in 2024 has been higher than any other year since data was recorded.
To date there have been 84 school shootings according to data compiled by CNN as of December 17. That is up from from 82 in 2023, the highest number ever recorded.
27 of these were on college campuses, and 56 were on K-12 school grounds. The incidents left 38 people dead and at least 115 other victims injured.
The data was compiled through an analysis of reported events gathered by Education Week, Everytown for Gun Safety and Gun Violence Archive which the news outlet cross checked with accounts registered by schools, police and in the media.
The United States’ gun problem
According to the latest data from the CDC, there were over 48,000 firearm-related deaths in the nation in 2022. Four out of ten of those were firearm homicides. Even more people are injured by firearms.
The United States is an outlier in the world in the amount of gun violence that communities across the nation experience. Among 65 high-income countries and territories, the US ranks seventh according to data analyzed by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation.
The US is at the top of the list when comes to school shootings. Data compiled by youthfacts suggests that there are as many shootings in US schools as there are in the whole of Germany in a given year and isgnificantly more than the UK.
The rate of occurrence of this perennial scourge for young Americans has been on the rise over the past several years. While it dramatically decreased during the first year of the pandemic, came back with a vengeance the subsequent years.
