How many times a day should you pee according to experts?

The urge to urinate varies from person to person, but experts say it’s best to aim for a healthy range of frequency. How often should you pee daily?

The number of times a person should urinate in a day varies depending on several factors like fluid intake, activity level, and overall health. Experts say seven to eight times a day is considered the norm for most healthy adults.

A number higher than this can be still considered normal, especially if you consume large amounts of water and diuretic drinks like coffee, tea, and alcohol. The most important consideration is what is typical for you.

“For most, it’s reasonable to need to pee every (three to four) hours during the day,” urologist Dr. Jamin Brahmbhatt told CNN.

“At night, ideally, you’re only getting up once or none. If you’re waking up more often, it could mean something’s off.”

Younger people may urinate less frequently than older adults, as bladder capacity tends to decrease with age. Active individuals may sweat more and retain less water, thus reducing the need to pee.

Medications such as diuretics for high blood pressure can also cause more frequent urination, while pregnant women often pee more often due to increased fluid volume and pressure on the bladder.

When to be concerned

According to Cleveland Clinic, the excessive need to pee (polyuria) could be an indication of underlying health conditions. Urinary tract infections (UTIs), diabetes, kidney issues, or an overactive bladder, can increase frequency.

Infrequent urination (oliguria) can also indicate a health issue if accompanied by other symptoms. Reduced peeing could indicate dehydration or kidney problems.

To maintain a healthy level of urination, drink around six to eight cups of water per day, limit caffeine and alcohol if experiencing frequent urination, and monitor for changes in patterns. Consult a healthcare professional if you notice significant differences.
