Walmart was founded by Sam Walton almost 60 years ago in Rogers, Arkansas. Walton opened the first Walmart store as a discount retail shop under the name “Wal-Mart Discount City.”

This marked the beginning of what would become one of the world’s largest and most well-known retail brands. Walmart has since grown to become a global retail giant with a wide range of products and services, including super-centers, warehouse stores, and e-commerce operations.

According to the Walmart website, the company operates more than 10,000 stores and clubs in 19 countries and e-Commerce websites, employing more than two million associates all over the world. Around 1.6 million of these employees work in the US.

Of the company’s more than 10,000 retail units, there are 4,616 Walmart branches in the US and 599 of Sam’s Club, a membership-based retail warehouse club chain that is a subsidiary of Walmart. It runs as a separate retail format and operates on a membership-based model.

Texas tops the list

According to information gathered by data company ScrapeHero, Texas is the state with the biggest number of Walmart locations, with 509 stores. This accounts for approximately 11% of all the store branches in the whole country.

Florida is a far second with 340 stores, followed by California with 278. North Carolina, which has 192 stores, and Georgia, which has 189, round out the top five.

Why is Walmart so successful?

Walmart’s success can be attributed to a combination of factors, including their core strategy of offering “Everyday Low Prices” on a wide range of products. This pricing approach attracts money-conscious customers and encourages loyalty.

The store also uses economies of scale to its advantage. Walmart’s enormous size gives it significant purchasing power. This allows the company to negotiate lower prices with suppliers and pass those savings on to customers.
