Janitors and sanitation workers help keep our world running. In a tight labor market like the one we currently find ourselves in, finding janitors can be hard, given that historically their pay has been low and their work undervalued. Glassdoor currently has over 20,000 janitorial jobs posted on the site.

The average hourly wage for a janitor in the United States is $15.32 per hour. Thirty-eight percent of all janitors in the US, around 824,710 individuals, work in private offices and are offered the lowest average salary of $14.32.

Cleaning staff who work in elementary and secondary schools ($16.76), colleges and universities ($ 16.85), and hospitals ($15.85) make slightly more on average. Glassdoor currently shows job postings for janitors in Jamestown City School District with a starting wage of $15 per hour.

However, it is janitors employed by local governments typically earn the highest wage at $19.02. Over in Minnesota, Glassdoor shows the City of Duluth offering a salary between $42,000 and $48,000, higher than the average published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Which states offer the highest salaries?

In addition to the industry one works in, pay for janitors, like other positions, vary by state.

Massachusetts, home to 47,540 janitors, has the highest average wage at $19.57. Followed closely by New York ($18.66), Washington ($18.32), and California ($17.99). The higher cost of living in these areas helps to explain the higher average salary offered.
