How much is left of a $100K salary after taxes in each state in 2024?
Some Americans don’t have to contend only with the IRS taking a cut from their paycheck but their state government too. Here’s a look state-by-state.
The number that feel that they live paycheck-to-paycheck has been increasing. According to a recent Your Money International Financial Security Survey conducted by CNBC and SurveyMonkey 65% of Americans are feeling the financial pinch of making ends meet compared to 58% in 2023.
The top three things that were causing financial stress among respondents were inflation, a lack of savings and interest rates. The last one, the Federal Reserve had hinted at possibly beginning to lower this year. However, while inflation is down from its summer 2022 peak, it is still stubbornly staying above the central bank’s target of 2%.
The salary needed though to live without feeling like you’re struggling is not the same in every part of the nation. One of the main factors is the cost of living which varies across the nation generally more expensive on the East and West coasts and in major metropolitan areas in between. But you also have to take into account what you take home at the end of the day from your paycheck.
Forty-four percent of those who participated in the CNBC and SurveyMonkey survey said that htey needed to earn $100,000 per year to feel financially secure. It should be good news then that the average salary in the United States is over $100,000 according to 2022 US Census data. Not really.
Don’t be fooled, as the vast majority of Americans earn much less. Less than 20 percent of individuals say that they earn a six-figure-plus salary and slightly more than a third of households according to 2022 data collected by Zippia.
Furthermore, while your salary may be listed at $100,000, that doesn’t mean you get to pocket the full amount. Uncle Sam gets his share and states often wet their beaks too, but not always.

Taxation varies state to state, from those with no income tax to those that take a hefty cut of your income on top of what you pay to the federal Internal Revenue Service. GoBankingRates looked into the data from 2024 federal and state tax brackets listed by the Tax Foundation.
