How much will the Florida minimum wage increase in September 2023?
Florida is among the US states with a higher minimum wage than the federal $7.50, and in September it will rise further.
In the United States, the federal minimum wage hasn’t changed in over a decade; it was last raised 14 years ago, to $7.25. This is the longest the country has gone without amending the amount since it was first set in 1938.
At state level, however, the minimum wage is higher than $7.25 in many areas of the US. To be exact, 30 states and the District of Columbia have all adopted minimums that are above the federally-imposed amount.
Some states implement these rises when inflation bites, while others have brought in automatic annual hikes.
How much will Florida’s minimum wage rise in in September?
Currently, the standard minimum wage in Florida is $11 - but this amount is to rise to $12 from 30 September 2023.
What’s more, automatic increases of $1 are scheduled to take place every year until 2026, as follows:
- 2024 – $13
- 2025 – $14
- 2026 – $15
The $15 minimum wage is to remain in place until 31 December 2027. Thereafter, changes will be subject to inflation rates.
It’s worth noting that local governments within Florida can also establish their own minimum wage, as long as it is larger than the statewide amount.
