The term ‘french fries’ is thought to originate from E. Warren’s Cookery for Maids of All Work, published in 1856, which gives a recipes for “French Fried Potatoes.”

The exact etymology of the phrase in the United States is still unknown but it is thought to originate from World War One. American soldiers arriving in Belgium during the conflict tasted the local delicacy and, as French was the official language of the Belgian Army at the time, the term ‘french fries’ may have been their name for the potatoes.
