Summer brings high temperatures which necessitate measures for cooling, not only for people, but also for food. For example, exposure to such strong heat causes the fruits we have at home to spoil more quickly. It is therefore necessary to take some steps to prevent our fruits from going to waste.

Regardless of whether we like to eat our fruit a little riper or not yet too ripe, it is important to separate them by their states. This is because when the fruit is in the process of ripening, it releases ethylene gas, which causes the fruits nearby to also ripen faster. This can affect both fruits and vegetables. Those that release the most ethylene are apples, bananas, pears and melons.

Secondly, it is important to store fruit in the refrigerator without the plastic in which it may have been packaged, and to leave space between each piece.

Something that helps to keep them fresher is keeping them in paper bags or glass containers. In addition, fruit should be stored in the space in the refrigerator provided for this purpose, as they are designed to control humidity and regulate cold.

Tips to keep in mind before consuming fruits

When eating fruits, they need to be washed, but if they are going to be put in the fridge, it is not advisable to do so if they are wet, as this will speed up their deterioration.

The same thing happens if we cut them, as doing this will speed up their oxidation. If we have already done this, we can spray the cut pieces with lemon and store them in a thermal bag or a plastic or glass container.

Finally, the fruits have ripened more than we would like, we can always freeze them and use them to make smoothies or fruit desserts. To do this, you must first wash them, cut them into small pieces and remove the inedible parts.
