How to vote in the Mexico 2024 elections from the US? Steps to follow and documents needed

Mexico is holding its presidential elections this 2 June. Find out how and where you can vote in the general elections from the United States.

The United States is not the only country that will elect a president in 2024. Its neighbor on the southern border, Mexico, will hold its general elections this Sunday, June 2. In the elections, Mexican voters will decide who will occupy the highest office in the nation for the next presidential period (2024 - 2030).

The candidates facing each other for the presidency of Mexico are Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, from the ‘Let’s Continue Making History’ (Sigamos Haciendo Historia) coalition, which includes the National Regeneration Movement (Morena), Labor Party (PT) and Green Ecologist Party of Mexico (PVEM); Xóchitl Gálvez, of the ‘Strength and Heart for Mexico’ (Fuerza y Corazón por México) alliance, made up of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) and National Action Party (PAN); and Jorge Álvarez Máynez from the Citizen Movement (MC).

Given that Mexicans represent 60% of the population of Hispanic origin in the United States (37.2 million residents), according to data from the Pew Research Center, we’ll explain below how and where you can cast your vote for the Mexican elections from the American Union.

How to vote in the 2024 Mexican elections from the United States? Steps to follow and necessary documents

To cast your vote from abroad you must registered to vote on the official website of the National Electoral Institute (INE). The deadline to register was February 25, 2024. If your registration was successfully approved, there are three ways to exercise your right: Vote online, by mail and in person on election day.

Online vote

Registered voters have until 6:00 p.m. (Central Mexico time) / 8:00 p.m. ET to cast their vote online on the official SIVEI website. To do this, you must log in with the username and password that you previously created.

Absentee ballot

If you registered to vote by mail, the INE should have sent you an electoral package to the registered postal address. The package will include the ballot, instructions on how to fill it out and return the documents to Mexico, and special envelopes for you to send the documents back. For your vote to be counted, The ballot must be returned to Mexico no later than June 1 at 8:00 a.m. (Central Mexico time) / 10:00 a.m. ET.

Vote in person

To vote in person, you can go to one of the Voting Receiving Modules enabled by the INE. To cast your vote you must present your current Voting Credentials, processed as of February 25, 2024 , abroad or in Mexico. You can consult the list of the 23 Voting Receiving Modules on the INE website.
