How will the 2025 COLA impact SNAP benefits?

The Social Security Administration has announced the 2025 cost-of-living adjustment. Here’s what it will mean for benefits.

The 2025 COLA impact on SNAP benefits

The Social Security Administration has announced the 2025 cost-of-living adjustment. The 2.5% increase will be applied to all Social Security benefits including those for retired workers, survivors and disability insurance (SSDI), as well as Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments.

It will also be applied to other federal pension payments to retired civil servants. However, it does not apply to benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). This program falls under the US Department of Agriculture and is managed by the Food Nutrition Service. However, SNAP recipients can look forward to slightly higher payments starting this month.

SNAP amounts for October 2024

Although SNAP is a federal program, the distribution of funds is administered at the state level, so the amounts, requirements and distribution dates may vary from state to state.

However, the USDA has a table of the maximum payments one can receive, depending on the number of household members. In August, the agency announced the new maximum allotments, deductions, and income eligibility standards after it applied its own 2025 Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA).

The maximum amount of SNAP coupons starting October 1, 2024 are as follows:

  • 1 member: $292
  • 2 members: $536
  • 3 members: $768
  • 4 members: $975
  • 5 members: $1,158
  • 6 members: $1,390
  • 7 members: $1,536
  • 8 members: $1,756
  • Additional member: +$220

The above amounts will remain in force until September 30, 2025. After that, the USDA will announce the cost-of-living adjustment, which will increase payments from October 2025 to September 2026.
