DeSantis is urging all residents to heed any evacuation orders issued in their area and seek higher ground.

Hurricane Idalia to intensify further before making landfall along Florida coast
As the storm has an inner core, it is expected to quickly intensify before it hits land. There is a strong possibility of dangerous storm surge inundation along parts of the Floria Gulf Coast where the storm surge warnings are already in effect. There is also a strong likelihood of life-threatening rip currents.
As in any storm situation, the forecast could continue to evolve, so it would be prudent to continue to watch out for updates.
