Update:

A Minnesota man has been shot and killed by federal agents as part of the ongoing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) activity in the city.

The man has been named as Alex Jeffrey Pretti, a 37-year-old nurse who worked in the intensive care unit at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System. His death has sparked uproar across the country, with videos of the incident shared widely online.

Footage appears to show a group of ICE agents pushing a man to the ground and beating him before a series of gunshots can be heard. Minnesota Governor Tim Waltz confirmed on social media that the person has died and that he has contacted the White House.

“Minnesota has had it. This is sickening. The President must end this operation. Pull the thousands of violent, untrained officers out of Minnesota. Now,” he posted on X.

This is the third shooting in less than three weeks by federal immigration agents that have been deployed in the Twin Cities and the second fatal one. The incident was caught on camera by bystanders.

ICE says victim had a gun, witnesses dispute claim

The incident took place Nicollet Ave. & E. 26th St in south Minneapolis during what the US Department of Homeland Security said was a “targeted operation” in the city. DHS said that the man approached the federal agents with a with a 9 mm semi-automatic handgun, reports the Star Tribune.

The agency says that their officers tried to disarm the man but that he violently resisted and “an agent fired defensive shots” out of fear for his and fellow officers’ safety. Multiple reports have countered this narrative, stating that the man had been disarmed before the agents shot him.

The Star Tribune reported that federal agents tried to order local police to leave the scene, but that Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara refused and “instructed his officers to preserve the scene.” Witnesses have been taken to the Whipple building, where federal officers have been staging the operations.

After the shooting protesters began to gather at the site of the shooting shouting for ICE to “go home” and hurling insults at them. Federal agents have used tear gas on the protesters and taken several into custody.
