Update:

If you often find yourself pacing while on a call, you’re not alone. Many people naturally start moving when they pick up the phone, whether it’s us or someone we know. Staying perfectly still during a conversation can feel harder than it seems.

Calling on the move

Psychologists suggest there’s a reason behind this behavior. In face-to-face conversations, we get extra feedback from facial expressions and body language, which helps communication. On a regular phone call, that visual information is missing. To make up for it, some people subconsciously walk back and forth.

Why movement helps

Psychologist Ken Fogel told Direct Message News that “talking on the phone lacks that visual feedback.” The body often responds by moving, partly to combat the slight boredom that can come from missing that usual social stimulus.

There are other possible explanations as well. Walking may help some people think and speak more clearly. It can also be a sign of nervousness, serving as a simple way to release extra energy during the call.
