If you have lost or your Social Security card has expired, here is how to apply for a new one
If you have lost your Social Security card or it has expired, don’t worry - getting a replacement is a straightforward process.

The fastest and most convenient way to request a replacement card is through the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) website.
To apply online:
- Create or log in to your my Social Security account at www.ssa.gov/myaccount.
- Select the “Replace your Social Security Card” option
- Verify your identity by providing information from your driver’s license or state-issued ID
- Answer some background questions and confirm your mailing address
However, online applications are only available to US citizens age 18 or older who have a U.S. mailing address and a driver’s license or state ID from a participating state.
If you can’t apply online, you’ll need to visit your local Social Security office. Here’s what to do:
- Gather necessary documents to prove your identity and citizenship, such as a U.S. birth certificate, passport, or driver’s license
- Download and complete Form SS-5 (Application for a Social Security Card) from the SSA website
- Locate your nearest Social Security office using the SSA Office Locator tool
- Bring your completed form and original documents to the office
Important considerations
There is no charge for a replacement Social Security card but you are limited to three replacement cards per year and ten during your lifetime, with some exceptions.
Processing time is typically 10-14 business days after your application is received.
