According to data from the US Census American Community Survey (ACS), these are the cities were female workers earn more than men.
While the gender pay gap continues to be an issue across the United States, in many cases, women are the main breadwinners, taking home bigger pay packets than men.
According to data from the US Census American Community Survey (ACS), female workers earn more than their male counterparts in 40 US cities.
GOBankingRates studied the ACS figures and compared female workers' median earnings as a percentage of male median earnings.
Here it’s important to differentiate between median salary and average salary. The median refers to the midway point in the full range of figures from the lowest salary to the highest. The average wage meanwhile, is calculated by adding up all of the wage values then dividing that figure by the number of workers.
Where do women earn more than men in the United States?
On that basis, in which US city do women earn the highest media wage compared to men? The study found that in Jacksonville, North Carolina, where where 36% of the working population are female and in full-time employment, earn 20.55% more than men - more than a fifth. However, the salaries are lower than most places with female workers earning around $32,768 per year while the men take home $27,181 before tax.

- Chamblee, Georgia: women: $58,590 men: $49,256 (18.95%)
- Lake Worth Beach, Florida: women: $38,565 men: $33,148 (16.34%)
- Morgantown, West Virginia: women: $48,861 men: $42,869 (13.98%)
- Mableton, Georgia: women: $56,649 men: $50,262 (12.71%)
- Coral Terrace, Florida: women: $43,659 men: $38,817 (12.47%)
- Seaside, California: women: $48,558 men: $43,316 (12.10%)
- Greenacres, Florida: women: $40,396 men: $58,109 (11.37%)
- Eureka, California: women: $45,330 men: $41,789 (8.47%)
The second city on the list where women earn more than men is Sun City, Arizona, where the difference in annual pay is $58,109 for women and $48,582 for men - around 19.61%.
Chamblee, Georgia is next with women taking home 18.95% more than men. In terms of salaries, $58,590 compared to $49,256.
Other US cities in which the women outstrip the men in take-home pay include: Carbondale, Illinois (8.42%), Ives Estate, Florida (7.54%), Vero Beach South, Florida (7.26%), Laurel, Maryland (6.25%), Pahrump, Nevada (5.47%), Goleta, California (5.12%) and Desert Hot Springs, California (4.27%).
